Canon Claude Rutter
We were lucky enough to have Canon Claude Rutter come to Chaffcombe to give a presentation on the history of Cistercian monks at and how they came to Forde Abbey. last night.
It was fascinating to hear what great distances the monks travelled and about the life they led at Forde when it was actually an Abbey.
We also heard about their local ‘daughter monastries’ and how important the church was pre-reformation.
Claude is a room steward at Forde Abbey and was able to give an insight into what original features of the building are now used for, and how it runs – hosting 50,000 visitors a year.
About 50 people attended the presentation, for which there was no charge. Donations were given to cover the cost of the hall, and Claude kindly suggested that any monies left over should go to the local church. After expenses we were able to donate just over £100 to Chaffcombe Church, so a big thank you to everyone that came and for your generosity.
